As I walked over the bridge today
I looked down and saw a large carp
motionless in the river. It lay on its
side, cushioned by the water lillies.
It was complete in every part,
but I knew it to be dead.
It looked at peace with god and man.
I walked on, but couldn’t help thinking
‘how short had been it’s life span’.

We learn from animals
the power of the unspoken word.
Her faithful sheepdog, Bongo
loved to carry tins home from the shop.
But as the weight became heavier,
into the bushes, the tin he would drop.
To his mistress this went unnoticed,
until at her gate she arrived displeased,
as neighbours said ‘Bongo’s mum is back,
she’s lost another tin of peas’

It’s the way you pull the udders
that gets the milk flowing free.
We’re fighting for our survival.
Here, pass the bucket to me.
Every drop of this is priceless.
‘Dairy farming’ is in our genes.
If this lot all collapses,
we’ll have to grow peas and beans!

Run along the garden wall,
and tip-toe over the fence.
Then return tomorrow for another crumb,
if indeed you’ve any sense.

A family member
with a heart of gold.
Years of devotion
and joy untold.
Never moody
or ever blue.
A wonderful temperament
and love so true.
Loyalty and trust
so paramount.
Always on you, we knew
we could count.
We couldn’t forsake you
when your illness came.
Because to us you were
exactly the same.
We battled through
those difficult days.
Together we survived
and developed new ways.
Though you’re gone now Megan
you’ll always be
the light in our life
though you couldn’t see.
We are ‘ in between’ cat’s
and at first it was nice.
Though now we are finding,
we’ve one or two mice.
The house has been ‘flea free’,
and there’s no more sick piles,
or hair’s on the carpets,
or whoopies on the tiles.
There’s no constant me-owing,
or being bossed around,
by those most demanding of creatures,
who are so profound.
But I fear we are weakening
with each passing day.
And I think there’ll soon be,
another puss here to stay!
‘It’s no use being maudlin’
Georgette said to Fred.
‘I know how much you loved him,
but your goldfish now is DEAD!’

He tugged at her skirt.
He was desperate to go
and find a free lamppost,
outside in the snow.

Don’t kill that rabbit for the sake of it
You mindlessly stupid cat
I’ve brought you up to know better
Sit on my knee whilst we have a chat.
I know that you care for me deeply
By the presents you place on the mat
But honestly, there’s simply no need
I can’t find a use for a headless rat!
So when you play ping-pong with voles
Or tear the insides out of a mouse
Kindly do it where I can’t see you
And don’t bring them into the house!
