He couldn’t see the wood for the trees,
he’d got in far too deep.
His life had become a jungle,
and at times he would sit and weep.
He couldn’t break from the monotony.
He was on a conveyor belt.
His ambitions had long since left him.
All he had was the hand life had dealt.
His family took him for granted
And swallowed up all he could earn.
He even contemplated suicide,
He didn’t know which way to turn.
In the end, one day he just walked off,
Sometime in the middle of May.
He took on a new identity,
and found a new life, far away.
That pot of gold
looks oh, so near.
But they don’t go in hospital
to die now – no fear!
Don’t count your chickens
until they are here.
She might have left it
to the Dogs Home, Dear!
The total complexity of marriage.
The unseen shackles that bind.
A lifetime sentence, after vows are exchanged,
We must be out of our minds!
‘Everything in moderation’,
our Dad always said.
But he worked ‘til he was sixty five,
then promptly dropped down dead.
Now where’s the sense in that?
Just take this life steady,
and fit into the daily grind.
Don’t be over ambitious,
or indeed, overstretch your mind.
Now where’s the sense in that?
Just be Mister Average,
and follow the flock of sheep.
Tumble through life in wonderment,
as if you are half asleep.
Now where’s the sense in that?
Dare to wake up feeling different,
with blood running fast through your veins.
You can meet any challenge ahead,
if you’ll only take hold of the reins!
Now there is some sense in THAT !
Bags in sumptuous leather
Boots and shoes with a name.
All of them costing a fortune
Isn’t it a shame!
Clothes with famous labels
Out of date so soon,
Get put on the credit cards,
and for a moment we’re over the moon.
We all need retail therapy,
to prevent us going insane.
This fast track modern living
can sometimes be a pain.

He looked at she
She looked at he.
No words needed.
After so long together
they knew each other
inside out.

Nastiness forgotten.
Harmony restored.
The row that just erupted,
Is of no importance,
and best ignored.
I have a drawer full
of nothing at all.
I never go near it
from one year to the next.
When I do eventually open it,
I feel quite vexed,
and slam it shut
for a few years more.
What useless junk
it has in store!
The wanting
The yearning
The build up
The urgency
The happening
The relief
The sleep
Forgive me darling
for not being perfect.
I’m only human,
after all.
I try to attend to
your every need.
But off my pedestal,
sometimes, I fall.
