I’ll meet you down by the bougainvilleas,
but promise me you’ll come alone.
I’ve something to show you that will melt
your heart, unless, of course, it’s made of stone.
The first venture away from his homeland
A chance to grow and exist
in the corporate world of opportunities.
In triumph, he punches his fist.

Sherbet dabs and liquorice,
and Uncle Joe’s mint balls.
Dandelion & Burdock and
Sarsaparilla from market stalls
Frozen Jubbly’s and Mivvi’s,
with ice cream in the middle.
Knickers down and over a grid,
they swung us for a piddle.
Never a cross word between them,
nor even a frustrated look of concern.
As a couple they had that rare closeness,
most long for, yet few seldom learn.
When cornered by the truth,
on him, silence like a blanket fell.
When a raw nerve was exposed,
he turned and ran like hell.

I visited her today, and was touched
by her engaging gentleness, her
request that I should hold her hand,
her look of love so approving that
said ‘I understand’
A passer by who seemed to know her,
said ‘Hello’ and asked who I might be.
She replied ‘I can’t remember his name,
but I know he’s a part of me’.
When all is said and done,
as decades travel on, the
mind reflects on happy times,
and confirms you are the one.
The forgiveness shone from his eyes.
His lingering blink spelt out defeat.
In this game of mindless competitiveness,
he was a push-over, so easy to beat.

The ‘speed daters’ are here
with their opinionated ooo’s and aaargh’s,
and us having no say in the matter,
sitting helplessly, caged behind bars.
Come to me, my wayward minstrel.
Rest your head against my chest.
Refuel your tank and find your equilibrium,
and in some ‘home time’ invest.
