Why would you hide behind closed curtains?
no-one wants to look at you
Only mushrooms thrive in darkness
Breathe some air and take in the view.
Why would you sit without a light shining?
now that dusk has turned to night.
You’ll have cockroaches come to visit
They think it’s their god given right.
Why would you lie under the canopy?
like you were in a silken tomb,
with your body as still as a corpse –
Bet you were loathe to come out of the womb?
She always said that some jiggery-pokery
went on there, and that things weren’t as they
appeared, and whenever she had to go passed
that place, she felt a shiver as she neared!
It was advertised as having an inglenook,
and original features from long ago, and
a kitchen resplendent with an aga,
(and an old boiler about to blow).
Your Father’s very good,
he doesn’t give me any
trouble in that department.
In fact, he never even brings it up!
I’m giving it to you straight
The first two were really great,
but the one after was even better,
and certainly well worth the wait.
I’ll meet you down by the bougainvilleas,
but promise me you’ll come alone.
I’ve something to show you that will melt
your heart, unless, of course, it’s made of stone.
The first venture away from his homeland
A chance to grow and exist
in the corporate world of opportunities.
In triumph, he punches his fist.

Sherbet dabs and liquorice,
and Uncle Joe’s mint balls.
Dandelion & Burdock and
Sarsaparilla from market stalls
Frozen Jubbly’s and Mivvi’s,
with ice cream in the middle.
Knickers down and over a grid,
they swung us for a piddle.
Never a cross word between them,
nor even a frustrated look of concern.
As a couple they had that rare closeness,
most long for, yet few seldom learn.
When cornered by the truth,
on him, silence like a blanket fell.
When a raw nerve was exposed,
he turned and ran like hell.
