When shadows creep
under moonlight’s beam;
no swans apparent
on the stream.
The water still,
at dead of night,
as forgotten souls
exert their right,
and dance along
the grassy bank;
half crazed when on
some ghoulish prank.
Performing handstands,
and back somersaults:
Rejoicing in escape,
from ancient vaults.
And in wild abandon,
floating through the air;
bewitched and spooked
by starlight’s glare.
Until, exhausted,
they fade from sight,
as fast as they came,
back into the night.
For when order left
and chaos came,
one last wish granted,
and life, never the same.
For in death, as in life
the soul never rests;
appearing out of the blue,
like uninvited guests,
who will return;
they always do.
Their purpose being,
to get a glimpse of you.
So when shadows creep
under moonlight’s beam,
and no swans apparent
on the stream,
do not back off
or turn away;
see them as mortals,
who found another way.
Face them, head on.
Look them in the eye.
Do not cower away,
or let them think you shy.
Say ‘Hello my friend,
I once knew you well’.
And I promise you this:
They will run like hell,
when their cover blown,
and you are seeing,
one who thought them self
an invisible being!
For when order left
and chaos came,
one last wish granted,
but with no time frame.

They never knew
what others saw,
when he was young
and against the law,
and stealing with
his mucky paw,
and locked up as
the final straw.
They never knew
what stuff he did,
whilst charging about
with a dustbin lid.
They ran like hell,
I swear they did;
their marbles rolling
down the grid.
They never knew
what he got up to.
For whilst ‘doing time’,
those ways he outgrew.
He learnt his lesson,
and started life anew,
and his just reward,
was finding you.
They never knew,
and it’s best kept that way.
The past is dead,
and a forgotten day.

Oh mirror of the inner soul,
that magnifies life sevenfold,
and holds the secrets there within
away from even next of kin.
Oh mirror of the inner soul,
in times of trouble, you console,
and make us what we are today,
by keeping back reflections sway.
Oh mirror of the inner soul,
together we will forward stroll,
through truth and lies and alibis,
and sobs and tears and wasted sighs.
Oh mirror of the inner soul,
falsehood you never will console.
The blinkered look, the honest stare;
thank god the mirror, always there.

Oh the joy of a witness
when insanity strikes;
the convenient bystander
that no defence likes.
Oh the happiness felt
when support is around;
the willing comforter there,
when little sense found.
Oh the justice at last
when all looked but lost;
the angel in disguise
on a path indeed crossed.
The lows so low,
no recovery sought.
Any hope of a future
amounting to nought.
The nonsensical reasoning
that idle time bought,
until vision arrived
and life’s blessings taught.
In helping others now suffering,
and in a trap caught,
was the very best medicine,
and quick relief, brought.

Never known such yearning:
Never known such force:
The only chance to see you,
completely blown off course.
Never known such anguish:
Never known such fear:
The time was dead against us,
though we felt your presence near.
Never known such feeling:
Never known such power:
We did our best to reach you,
but missed you by an hour.
Never known such sadness:
Never known such woe:
Our paths, they failed to meet,
but still, we love you so.
Never known such adrenalin:
Never known such urge:
The odds were stacked against us,
but by god, we felt the surge.

A little nudge;
a word in the ear;
from a well meaning friend
or a concerned peer,
can oddly, sometimes
a button click,
when reality’s burden,
plays a blindfold trick.

In times of hardship
you were there;
a constant in my set.
Re-assuring and cajoling,
and to you I am in debt.
In times of heartache
you were there;
the first to hold my hand.
Re-affirming and supporting,
without question or demand.
To give of love
and nothing more,
is sometimes
not enough.
To do what one
is asked to do,
can be a
double bluff.
To give of time
and feel a bore,
is sometimes
really rough.
To do what just
comes naturally,
proves one is made
of stronger stuff!

You waved goodbye
and crossed the lane,
and waved again;
I felt your pain.
I found it hard
to close the door,
in case you waved
again once more.
And that you did;
I thought you might.
You waved at the corner,
and were gone from sight.
Your wave stayed with me,
for the rest of the day;
the heartache you suffered
clearly on display.
Oh the power of a wave,
when a wave is returned;
it brings a lump to the throat,
and leaves a tummy churned.
And what bond of friendship
is always there,
that starts off with a wave,
that says ‘I care’.
