It’s true that opposites attract

and open up avenues to each other.

But when the differences are too great,

sometimes the effort isn’t worth the bother.

Papa once said

‘I like all flavours of ice cream, I do’,

causing the family to look at each other

and fall about laughing.

Those words hung around his neck like

a banner and were repeated whenever

ice cream was seen or mentioned.

The cockatiels became his only form

of emotional support after Clarissa died.

They too, missing her presence and 

understanding his heartache,  shared in

the grieving process. 

Without his beloved birds those first difficult

months would have been intolerable.

Heaven was in the back seat of his limousine,

until a late night voyeur appeared on the scene.

Allow the fledglings freedom

to rise and fall at will.

Be there if they should need you,

a blip, a diversion, a niggling pain.

Others see it as a lucky opportunity,

a rainbow, a chance to showcase and

He spent years sat on the Tube

in the midst of life, yet speaking

to no-one.

Now decades later, he sits in a

Care Home doing exactly the

same.

They were never destined to lie together.

Theirs was a friendship based on protection.

Had lust entered the frame, complications would

have arisen, forcing the dynamics to change.

The journey was exhilarating

and much better than the arrival.

For being there meant facing the

prospect of the departure, which

would come around far too quickly.
